Max, schweizerischer Maler, Grafiker, Plastiker, Designer, Architekt und Kunsttheoretiker, * Winterthur 22. 12. 1908, ✝ Berlin 9. 12. 1994; studierte 1924-27 an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich und 1927-29 am Bauhaus in Dessau, gehörte 1932-36 der Gruppe Abstraction-Création an, war 1953-56 Rektor der Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, wo er die Bauhausidee einer funktionalen, alle Formbereiche umfassenden Ästhetik zum Unterrichtsprinzip machte. Als Maler entwickelte Bill Form- und Farbsysteme, die auf mathematisch-logischen Konzeptionen beruhen und zu den wichtigsten schweizerischen Beiträgen zur konkreten Kunst gehören. Seine Plastik kreist, nach Anfängen zwischen Konstruktivismus und Surrealismus, um das Problem des kontinuierlichen Raums, den Bill in geometrischen Konstruktionen oder gleitenden Kurvenflächen erfasste (»Kontinuität«, 1947 in Zürich errichtet, 1948 zerstört; Rekonstruktion in Frankfurt am Main, Taunusanlage, 1986 aufgestellt). Im Bereich des Designs vertrat Bill eine rationale, strengem Kalkül folgende Ästhetik.
